As I’m quite sure, you’re wondering what in the world the author means by this.  Let me tell you, I was wondering the same thing when I read it this morning out of a book entitled “The Hole in our Gospel“.  It was pretty early (the sun wasn’t even up yet) but it managed to catch my attention.  I hope it did yours as well.

Do you remember a while back the “W.W.J.D?” campaign?  I do.  And no, I didn’t wear the bracelet back then, but as a believer in Christ, it did affect me in that more thought was given to the decisions I made.  Over the past few weeks, I have been struggling a lot with the challenges of life, the joys and hurts, but lately, mostly the hurts.  During my quiet time this morning with God, I asked for direction, particularly with “Jake’s Mission”.  Will others believe in it and its purpose as strongly as I do?  A few minutes later, I opened to chapter two in ”The Hole in our Gospel” by Richard Stearns and here is what I read:

“To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice” ~ Confucius

……….“When I was a kid, I used to plan “coin flip” bike rides with some of my friends.  the idea was that we would all start riding our bikes down the street, and when we came to a major fork or intersection, we would stop and flip a coin.  ‘if it’s heads, we go straight,’ we’d say.  ‘If it’s tails, we turn right’.  And then we would do whatever the coin flip told us to.  For a bunch of ten-year-olds, this could be a pretty exciting adventure, and it sometimes took us places we had never been, quite far from our safe little neighborhood.  The only rule, you had to do what the coin flip said”.

It parallels so perfectly with Jake’s Mission.  There are always going to be choices, big ones and small ones, easy and hard ones, but it takes commitment, daily, to do what’s right!  As the author pointed out “…that kind of commitment will inevitably take us out of our safety zones, but, oh, what an adventure for the person who actually does it!”
